Trustworthy Journalism

Craig has always believed that trustworthy journalism is the immune system of democracy. Since launching Craig Newmark Philanthropies in 2016, Craig has donated more than a $50 million to newsrooms, journalism schools and efforts to protect reporters on the frontlines of protecting our country.

In 2018 the City of New York’s journalism school was renamed the Craig Newmark School of Journalism following Craig’s $20 million gift to the graduate program. Craig’s funded the Columbia Journalism Review and the Poynter Foundation, along with newsrooms at ProPublica, The 19th, The City, and Hell Gate. Reporter protection efforts at the International Women’s Media Foundation and Media Defence have received grants from Craig, while his support has been instrumental in the work of Howard University’s Center for Journalism & Democracy, Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, and the University of Texas’ Center for Ethical Leadership in Media. As a proud pioneer of Web 1.0, Craig has also been a long-time funder, supporter and user of Wikipedia and Consumer Reports.
